Before I spoke more about Branko Rakia Here are key aspects of the tradition of making brandy in Serbia:

What is ‘Rakija’ (Rakia)

Rakia, a fruit-based spirit distilled in copper pot stills, boasts a rich tradition and plays a vital role in the customs and history of the Serbia. Crafted locally for centuries, it is a cultural cornerstone shared by many in the Balkans. Achieving top-notch rakia demands essentials such as ripe, organic fruit, chemically examined and distilled water, superior distilling pots, years of practiced expertise, and skilled technicians.

#1 Fruit Varieties

Plum Rakija (Šljivovica)

Plum brandy is perhaps the most famous type of rakija in Serbia. The plum trees are abundant in the region, and Šljivovica is often considered the national drink.

Other Fruits

While plum rakija is predominant, other fruits like apricots, grape, apples, pears, mulberry and quince are also used to make rakija. Also, you can find Rakia made from honey and different types of herbs.

#2 Harvest and Distillation

Autumn Ritual

Rakija-making is often associated with the autumn harvest season. Families and communities come together to pick the fruits, with the process serving as a communal activity.

Copper Stills

Traditional copper stills are commonly used for distillation. The craftsmanship of these stills is considered essential for preserving the quality and character of the rakija.

Family Distilleries

Many families have small distilleries or know someone in the community who does. It’s not uncommon for families to have their own recipes and techniques passed down through generations.

Attention to Detail

Craftsmanship is highly valued in rakija production. Attention to detail in the fermentation and distillation process is crucial for producing high-quality brandy.

Barrel Aging

Some rakijas are aged in wooden barrels, contributing to the complexity of flavours. Oak barrels, in particular, are favoured for this purpose.

#5 Health and Medicinal Beliefs

Perceived Medicinal Benefits: Traditionally, rakija is believed to have medicinal properties. It is often used to warm up the body, especially during cold winter months.

Herbal Infusions: Some families infuse rakija with herbs, spices, or honey for additional flavour and potential health benefits.

Branko’s Experts Suggested Serving Method

We recommend consuming it in a whiskey glass with a single ice cube, enhancing the flavour by unfurling the drink’s rich bouquet. With a high alcohol volume of 50%, the temperature pleasantly diminishes as the ice melts.

Ideal as both an aperitif before a meal or a digestive after, “BRANKO” pairs exceptionally well with dark chocolate or chocolate desserts. The playful tartness of this plum rakija, when combined with the sweetness of chocolate, promises to astonish your senses.

For a delightful combination, serve “Branko” alongside coffee, creating a harmonious interplay of flavors. When enjoyed with lunch or dinner, the best way to fully experience the plum aroma is to pair it with a spicy meat dish.

My Experience

I highly endorse this experience. The rakija’s quality is exceptional, and the entire journey immerses you in Serbian culture. You not only gain valuable insights but also relish a relaxing time as a knowledgeable guide explains the entire process of crafting this spirit, along with its rich historical background.

The tradition of making rakija in Serbia reflects a blend of cultural, social, and familial elements. It’s not just a beverage but a symbol of community, celebration, and shared heritage.
