Winter Comfort: Serbian Bean Stew (Pasulj)

This hearty bean stew is a beloved family tradition in Serbia, enjoyed all year round. In winter, it’s warming, filling, and full of healthy veggies and pork shank—perfect for cozy nights.

In summer, it’s equally delicious as a lighter, meat-free version. Cooked with fresh vegetables and served as a wholesome, comforting dish. Pasulj isn’t just food—it’s a taste of home, tradition, and togetherness.

Warm up your winter evenings with this hearty Serbian bean stew! Perfect for 4 people.

Ingredients:

  • 250–500 g beans (soaked overnight)
  • Pork Shank and bacon, to taste
  • 5 carrots, chopped
  • 2 onions (yellow or purple), chopped
  • Few garlic cloves
  • 1–2 potatoes (mix varieties if you like)
  • Optional: parsnip, cucumber, lentils
  • Spices: smoked paprika, salt, pepper, basil, Provence herbs
  • 2 soup cubes
  • Water or stock
Serve hot with bread, chili, raw garlic, or cabbage salad.

Instructions:

  • Saute onions & garlic until golden.
  • Add meat, sear on all sides.
  • Add carrots & other veggies, pour in water/stock to cover.
  • Season with paprika, salt, pepper, herbs, and optional soup cubes.
  • Simmer on medium-low for ~3 hours until beans are tender.

Tip: Soak beans overnight for easier digestion. Basil preserves flavor and adds a fresh aroma. Perfect winter meal for cozy nights! Let me know how it goes. 🤍
