History of Jordaan

The Jordaan was built in the early 17th century, with many houses for the working-class and immigrants. Immigrants were mainly from France, Spain, England, and Portugal. It was a poor district at that time.

“The name of the district, Jordaan, is supposed to come from the French word for the garden: Jardin. The streets in this area are named after plants and flowers. Others say it is named after the Jordan-river because of the many Jews that fled to that area.’
